Union striker Behrens: “We’re a great team”

By Sebastian Karkos

Two years ago Kevin Behrens (32) fought in Sandhausen against relegation to the second division. Today the attacker is in second place in the football league with Union and can theoretically still win three titles (championship, DFB Cup, Europa League) this season.

The attacker made it 1-0 against Mainz (2-1) on Saturday – his fourth goal in the last eight games. Born in Bremen, he is in top form.

… the question of whether he is in the form of his life: Yes, but. If you can prove the level for a few weeks, you can already say that it’s the best shape I’m in. Why? Never give up, always work on it, always do something for yourself, before training, after training, believe in yourself – and take the chance.

… his attitude and career: My path wasn’t normal, but I always accepted the situation. It’s the passion for football. I always wanted to get the maximum out of it. You also have to be in the right place, and luck is also part of it that Union gave me the chance.

… the strength of Union: We’re a great bunch. Everyone is there for each other, on and off the pitch. We’re a cool unit, everyone wants to achieve something. Everyone knows that we can only achieve our goals if we stick together. That is what sets us apart.

… his contract extension, which was made public on Sunday: For me it was clear to stay here. Of course, the talks take a while, you have to discuss things in detail.

… the collapsed Isco commitment and the reaction of the Union professionals: Of course we joked about it and said: ‘You’ll be getting passports from Isco soon. He’s served Ronaldo before.’ At some point we thought: Now he’s really coming, awesome. It would have been something special for all of us, for Union. A great footballer who has achieved a lot. But I don’t know how he would have accepted the whole thing here.

… the next opponent RB Leipzig: A tough guy who hasn’t lost 18 games. A strong team with a lot of pace.
