Union Berlin President Dirk Zingler has other goals for the Köpenickers than maximizing profits.
“The reward in a football club is to play football successfully and thereby serve the community. Football is a social product,” said Zingler of the “Berliner Zeitung” (Saturday).
“Financial gain is not our aim, unless we use it in turn to develop the club.”
For him, efficiency also means: “How much money do we use for one point in the table? And when I compare the funds used in the league, I can see that – from an economic point of view – we are actually German champions.”
In his own words, the 58-year-old doesn’t think much of acquiring more and more money for football in order to be able to wage a salary competition for players.
“We will lose this competition in Germany, no matter how many investors we offer shares in our football,” said Zingler. “Rather, we would destroy a football culture that is unparalleled in Europe.”
