Union is playing internationally again: “It’s crazy”

Not the Champions League: At the Bundesliga club Union Berlin, coach Urs Fischer is happy about the minimum Europa League goal after the 4: 2 (3: 0) against SC Freiburg. “We qualified for the Europa League group stage today. That’s for sure, I’m really happy about that,” said Fischer on Saturday. “It’s crazy, surreal, I have to be honest. I can’t really believe it at the moment either.”

With the home win against Freiburg, the Berliners can no longer be denied a place among the top five teams. Should the Berliners end up third or fourth, the club would have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in its history.

“If you had such a lead, then you wanted to take fifth place at least, we did that today,” said Union central defender Robin Knoche – and with a view to the Champions League: “We’re looking forward to it and know that it’s not over yet We’ll focus on the last two games – and then we’ll see.”

Union coach Fischer predicts difficult games

Due to the clearly better goal difference compared to Freiburg, who are fifth, Union should have at least fourth place with another win from the remaining two games.

“We have a good starting position, but nothing has been achieved yet,” said the 57-year-old Fischer. In the upcoming away game at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and in the last game of the season against Werder Bremen, it won’t be easy, predicted the Union coach, but the “starting position looks good, we have it in our own hands.”
