Union Berlin has closed the gap in goalkeepers again. Three days after Andreas Luthe left second division promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Berlin’s Lennart Grill borrowed from league competitor Bayer Leverkusen, as Union announced on Thursday.
Both clubs did not provide any information on the contract period and possible purchase options. The 23-year-old’s contract at Leverkusen runs until the end of the 2023/2024 season.
“Lennart is a very interesting young goalkeeper who has great potential. He will play an important role in the squad and make our team stronger in the coming Bundesliga season,” said Union Managing Director Profisport Oliver Ruhnert about the new signing.

Born in Idar-Oberstein, he guarded the Kaiserslautern goal in 51 league games from 2016 to 2020 before moving to the Werksclub.
After the first season in the Rhineland, the U21 European champions of 2021 switched to the Norwegian first division side Brann Bergen, for whom the 1.92 meter goalkeeper was between the posts 13 times. At Union, Grill is hoping to add more to his previous five games in the Bundesliga for Leverkusen.
Grill is the sixth newcomer to the Irons. The Berliners had previously signed Jamie Leweling and Paul Seguin from Fürth, as well as Danilho Doekhi from Vitesse Arnhem. Janik Haberer from SC Freiburg, Bochum’s Milos Pantovic and Tim Skarke from SV Darmstadt 98 will also play for Union next season.
