Union Berlin: Timo Baumgartl arouses interest in the Bundesliga and Serie A

Union loan ends in summer

Already in winter, Timo Baumgartl was dissatisfied with his game shares at 1. FC Union Berlin – but a premature termination of the loan was out of the question for the Bundesliga club at the time. Since then, however, the 27-year-old central defender has only played three times, has not been nominated for the Europa League and has not been part of the squad in the last three Bundesliga games. So it doesn’t seem unlikely that the paths will part in the summer – just like that Baumgartl will make a new start at regular club PSV Eindhoven. Transfermarkt can confirm information from Italy that there is a lot of interest in the former U21 international.

At first the portal had “Calciomercato‘ reported on advances from Serie A teams Udinese Calcio, AC Monza and US Sassuolo. In addition, according to TM information, Espanyol Barcelona and one or the other Bundesliga club. PSV would hardly put a stone in Baumgartl’s way and would be satisfied with a fee of 1.5 million to 2 million euros for the defender, who is tied until 2024.

The top Dutch club made Baumgartl one of the most expensive players in club history in 2019, paying a total of 12 million euros to VfB Stuttgart. The native of Böblingen lost his regular place in Eindhoven before the season was canceled due to the corona pandemic.

After comeback: Timo Baumgartl only rarely works for Union Berlin

The interested Serie A teams are currently in the middle of the table, but have ambitions for more – above all the financially strong Monza, which belongs to Silvio Berlusconi. Espanyol, meanwhile, would have to stay up in the league for a possible signing of Baumgartl, the Catalans are currently three points behind the saving bank in 19th place in the table.

At Union, Baumgartl was a regular employee until his testicular cancer diagnosis in spring 2022. In September he celebrated an acclaimed comeback, but only rarely found his way into Urs Fischer’s successful team against competitors such as Diogo Leite (24), Danilho Doekhi (24) or Robin Knoche (30). Union has agreed a purchase option with PSV. In December, Baumgartl declared that he wanted to deal with the “iron” in March about his future.
