Union Berlin: Sale of Taiwo Awoniyi very likely

Interest from Premier League

Taiwo Awoniyi was there again last Friday: The Union Berlin striker scored the winning goal against 1. FC Köln to make it 1-0 and increased his goals tally to twelve in the Bundesliga – only five players have scored more in the current season German upper house. It seems more than questionable whether the 24-year-old will continue to hunt for goals for the “Iron” in the coming season.

According to information from “Bild” newspaper it is very likely that the attacker will leave in the summer, Union will not resist a sale. The “kicker” also reports that Awoniyi is one of the prominent candidates for a change alongside Sheraldo Becker (27). Goal had previously reported interest from West Ham United, Newcastle United and Southampton FC from the Premier League.

As a possible transfer, the online portal speculated about a sum of 30 million euros, which would make Awoniyi by far the most expensive departure of the Köpenicker. “It’s a nice sum, I have to say. For us, that would be a departure into a whole new dimension,” commented Unions Sport Managing Director Oliver Ruhnert on “DAZN” on the sidelines of the Cologne game.

Exit from Union Berlin? Coach Fischer ‘can’t influence’ Awoniyi

Even if Awoniyi’s ex-club FC Liverpool reportedly participates in a sale with ten percent of the transfer fee, the Berliners can expect a substantial transfer plus. Union had transferred €6.5m to the Reds for the Nigerian international last summer after a one-year loan. Since then, Awoniyi has scored 17 goals (four assists) in 36 competitive games and is by far the most successful striker in coach Urs Fischer’s team.

“One or the other top performer has left us or will leave us in the future,” said the Swiss coach to “kicker” about the plans of the “iron” for the coming season. When asked explicitly about a possible departure from Awoniyi, Fischer added that the Union structure could possibly wobble, “but I don’t have that in mind. I can’t influence that.”
