1. FC Union Berlin has fulfilled their dream of the Champions League exactly four years to the day after being promoted to the Bundesliga. The Irons defended fourth place in the Bundesliga with a 1-0 (0-0) win against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Rani Khedira (81st minute) scored the winning goal for the Berliners in Stadion an der Alten Försterei on Saturday, which made it perfect for Urs Fischer’s team to take part in the most important European competition for the first time.

With 62 points, the past season is already the most successful in Union’s short Bundesliga history. In addition, the team remained unbeaten at home throughout the season and even extended this current record series among all Bundesliga clubs to 23 games across the seasons.

Exactly four years ago, the Berliners were promoted to the upper house after beating VfB Stuttgart 0-0 in the relegation.

In the meantime, Union had even led the table for seven game days this season in autumn. After eleventh place in the inaugural season and the following seventh and fifth places, we have now climbed one place. The Irons qualified for an international competition for the third time in a row.
