Union Berlin | Peter Neururer shows sympathy for Urs Fischer: “Football is that brutal”

Urs Fischer and Union Berlin rode a wave of success together for years. But the current negative run has now led to a separation between coach and club. Long-time Bundesliga coach Peter Neururer is suffering.

“Urs Fischer took over the team in the 2nd Bundesliga and led it up to the 1st Bundesliga in an inimitable way. And then it went on and on, all the way to the Champions League,” Neururer reminded “wettfreunde” of the team’s successes Swiss in Köpenick.

“Then he becomes coach of the year in Germany, that’s all. And five months later he’s history. Football is that brutal,” the cult coach expressed sympathy for the 57-year-old.

Neururer hopes that Fischer will return to the football stage soon. “Berlin will hopefully get back on the right track, which they had for many years with Urs Fischer. The possibility exists, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. A separation that hurts, but a separation that was very fair,” said the former Bundesliga coach.

Union Berlin: Separation “only brought forward”

Union Berlin and Fischer announced their separation after five years on Wednesday morning. “We both knew that it was a final collaboration. We had agreed when it would end. We knew the date. So we actually just brought the end forward. Of course that makes you sad, that makes the club sad,” said Union President Dirk Zingler at a press conference.

“If I’m honest, I was always afraid of this day and the day after. Now it’s here, a little earlier than we all wanted,” the official continued.

Fischer took over Union Berlin in the summer of 2018. The capital city club is currently in last place in the Bundesliga after nine defeats in a row.

U19 coach Marco Grote and assistant coach Marie-Louise Eta take over on an interim basis.
