Union Berlin: New contracts for Fischer and Ruhnert? Continuity important for Zingler

Club president about plans

1. FC Union Berlin relies on continuity when it comes to sporting leadership and, despite qualifying for the first time for the Europa League in the Bundesliga, only wants to continue to pursue modest goals. Meanwhile, sports director Oliver Ruhnert and coach Urs Fischer are to be tied to the club in the long term. “We really enjoy working together and we will continue,” said club president Dirk Zingler in an interview with “Sport Bild”.

He pointed out that after seven years with Uwe Neuhaus as coach of the Swiss fishermen, he is now in his fifth season with the Berliners. “Oliver Ruhnert is also here for the sixth year. Continuity at the management level – that is the be-all and end-all. Then you will achieve stability, be successful and get to the next level,” emphasized Zingler. Fischer, who has scored an average of 1.54 points in 159 games so far, is contractually bound to the Berliners until 2023.

When asked about his professional future, the coach said in April that the question was not the top priority at the time. “We are in a phase where a lot is at stake for us. The future of the coach is not decisive,” said Fischer. During his last extension in December 2020, he signed a new working paper around six months before the end of the contract.

Union qualified for the Europa League for the first time in fifth place last season after the club took part in the Conference League internationally last season. Nevertheless, the club boss Zingler insists that the Berliners continue to set only conservative goals in the Bundesliga. FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen showed that last summer. VfL Wolfsburg also played against relegation for a long time. “For ten, twelve clubs – including us – it’s about being hardworking and collecting points against relegation. When you’ve achieved that, you can set new goals for yourself,” said Zingler, who has been president of the “Iron” since 2004.
