Werder would be “always an option”
While Kevin Möhwald played 21 games in his first season for Union Berlin, the 29-year-old is completely left out in the current season with the “Iron”. Not once was the midfielder in coach Urs Fischer’s matchday squad. It is hardly surprising that Möhwald now regrets moving from Werder Bremen to Köpenicker in summer 2021.
“With what I know now, I wouldn’t make that decision again. Last year’s season was a bit disappointing for me. I didn’t get the playing times I was hoping for. But I played there at least once, this season I don’t have a squad nomination to show for it,” said Möhwald in the “Deichstube” podcast.embanked“. “In the end, this is a wasted year.”

Saying goodbye to Bremen was not easy for him. “It was a very difficult decision. Union approached me with the prospect of playing European and Bundesliga football. In terms of the package, it was the best decision I could have made at the time,” Möhwald recalled. “But it was never a decision against Werder Bremen, but a decision for the Union Berlin package.”
Möhwald wants to leave Union Berlin: Werder Bremen “always an option”
With little prospect of a change in his situation, Möhwald and Union should part ways for the coming season. “I’m going to do this through the summer and then I’ll see what makes sense. In any case, I don’t want to have a year like that again,” admitted the right footer. Where it goes next for him is still completely open. “I don’t have any concrete plans yet. There are always conversations, they also took place in winter. The situation was already clear to me then. But the right thing wasn’t there yet.”
Möhwald would have nothing against a return to Bremen. “Of course Werder is always an option,” he said. “I only have good memories of Bremen, apart from the relegation. I have the city and the club in my heart.” Möhwald continues to keep an eye on the developments at the Green-Whites. “I’m still following SV Werder very closely. If I can, I watch every game live.”
