Union Berlin favorite in courting Doekhi – would be 21. Free transfer since promotion

Glasgow Rangers Outdone?

Union Berlin appears to have beaten Europa League finalists Glasgow Rangers to win Danilho Doekhi. As “De Telegraaf“reported, both clubs are courting the captain of Vitesse Arnhem, but the Köpenickers are said to be ahead and want to close the deal quickly.

The central defender would fit into the prey scheme of the “iron”. The 23-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, so he’s available on a free transfer. Two players signed the Berliners with Janik Haberer (28) and Paul Seguin (27) for free. Overall, he would be the club’s 21st free transfer signing since they were promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019.

The right-footed player could have left the club from the Eredivisie during the winter break, and Rangers are said to have already shown interest back then. But he decided to stay – also because Vitesse was wintering in the Conference League. An important criterion when choosing his future employer should be participation in a European competition, which both clubs can offer. But the Bundesliga now seems to be the deciding factor against the less attractive Scottish Premiership.

Doekhi is in his fourth season at Vitesse and has become a regular and top performer over the past two years under German coach Thomas Letsch. This also boosted its market value, which went from 1 to 3 million euros between January and May 2021. For the defensive man it would be his first stop abroad. The native of Rotterdam previously played for the U19s and the second team at Ajax Amsterdam.
