After union farewell
After leaving Union Berlin, Niko Gießelmann found a new, old club. The 31-year-old returns to SpVgg Greuther Fürth, for which he was active from 2013 to 2017 and played 132 games (seven goals). The left-back, who was recently one of the most valuable German players without a club, signed a two-year contract with “Kleeblatt”.

“Niko knows the cloverleaf and has always remained connected to the club. The fact that the chance of a return has now arisen is a very good thing for both sides,” said sports director Rachid Azzouzi. Coach Alexander Zorniger added: “In Niko we are getting an experienced player who brings a very high level of intensity and a certain amount of variability to the table. He played at the highest level last season. Now we will immediately integrate him into team training to get him used to our processes as quickly as possible.”
Gießelmann, who played 36 games for Union last season, competes at left-back with Kerim Calhanoglu (21) and Luca Itter (24). The latter falls out with an injury to the abdominal muscles for the time being. “I am very happy that my return to Fürth worked out and that I am happy to meet some familiar faces who have always made this club special. I’ve kept myself fit individually over the past few weeks and I hope to be able to help the team as soon as possible,” said Gießelmann.
