Union: Berlin daycare centers are on the verge of collapse

From the point of view of the GEW union, the new quarantine rules for Berlin daycare centers are unacceptable.

The Senate Department for Education and Family announced on Wednesday that contact persons of infected people at Berlin daycare centers can use the “test-to-stay” procedure to avoid quarantine from Monday as long as they test negative for five days in a row.

“Instead of sitting down with everyone involved and working out solutions, the day-care centers are being overwhelmed again with the test-to-stay procedure,” said Martina Regulin, chairwoman of GEW Berlin, on Thursday.

The parents could weigh up whether they wanted to use this opportunity for their children, while the educators, on the other hand, did not. You would have to keep working, criticized the GEW. They are on the edge of their performance limits and the daycare centers are on the verge of collapse.

The logistical test effort is too great, more and more daycare centers have to be closed.

The “Tagesspiegel” reported online on Wednesday that around 150 daycare centers across Berlin were partially and 35 completely closed. The family administration did not provide any information when asked.

Christiane Weißhoff, responsible for child and youth welfare on the board of GEW Berlin, said that the new regulation would accept the high number of infections in the daycare centers.

“Nevertheless, the colleagues have to make a huge effort to maintain the appearance of health protection. This is a farce.”

The educator Lavinia Neumann added that the employees felt abandoned. The rule that parents are not allowed to enter the rooms is also difficult for small children and their parents in day-to-day life.

“The effect of this measure is small anyway.” For the educators, however, it is an additional burden.
