Club provides “unnecessary topics”
Union Berlin has suspended its striker David Datro Fofana for a week because he refused to shake hands with coach Urs Fischer. The Ivorian will train individually until next Wednesday and will therefore miss the Köpenickers’ games in the Bundesliga at Werder Bremen (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.) and in the DFB Cup at VfB Stuttgart (Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.), as Union said on announced at a press conference on Thursday. “I hope that the boy learns from situations like this,” said Fischer.
Chelsea loanee Fofana walked past Fischer without eye contact or a handshake in the 1-0 defeat in the Champions League against SSC Napoli on Tuesday after being substituted in the 70th minute. That night, Fofana apologized via Instagram. He also did this personally to the trainer and managing director Oliver Ruhnert, it was said on Thursday.
Coach Fischer explained that he did not feel personally attacked by the action because it was about the team. “Football is still a team sport, so sometimes you have to fit in,” emphasized the 57-year-old Swiss. “It’s about accepting decisions.”
Fischer (quoted via “Kicker“) also said to the journalists: “These are unnecessary topics. We’ll give you headlines. We haven’t done a bad job over the last five years. You didn’t have much.”
