Union in crisis
Union Berlin coach Urs Fischer encouraged his struggling attackers Kevin Behrens and Kevin Volland in individual discussions. “He has a loading jam, that’s true. But he still tries to work, to provoke it,” said the Swiss about Behrens. “But I also think that he has a lot on his mind right now, is thinking too much,” said Fischer before the Bundesliga game against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky).
He spoke about this with the new national player. “As a striker, such phases are part of the game; you have to stay cool, but remain convinced that the next opportunity will come,” said the coach, who received the full support of his superiors in the biggest sporting crisis of his time in office. Behrens scored four goals in the first two Bundesliga games and has been waiting for another success since then. Union has lost eleven games in a row.
Summer newcomer Volland hasn’t scored a goal for Berlin yet. “He tries everything. “I’m just having a bit of trouble with the processes at the moment,” explained Fischer. “They don’t fit as well as we would like them to, as he would like them to.” That’s why Volland thinks too much in some situations, says the 57-year-old. “But he’s taking steps. That’s crucial for me.”
Overall, Fischer appealed for his players to continue to show courage. “Guys, make decisions. Take responsibility,” he said. “If that’s no longer the case, then it will be really difficult.” The team hasn’t scored a goal in four games. “We have to try to provoke more offensive actions.”
