After testicular cancer
On an otherwise all-round successful day, there was only one small flaw for Union Berlin defender Timo Baumgartl. “For my part, I could have played longer, also in terms of strength. I’m an ambitious player,” said the 26-year-old after the 2-0 lead by the Bundesliga leaders from Köpenick against VfL Wolfsburg, his first appearance after his testicular cancer became known a little more than four months ago.
But coach Urs Fischer probably wants to take things slowly. “It’s all ok. I’m not angry with him at all. I’m just happy,” said Baumgartl, who was extensively celebrated by the “Iron” fans. In the 62nd minute, Fischer brought on defender Paul Jaeckel (24) for the former junior international.

Captain Christopher Trimmel (35) was happy about the returnee: “We missed him.” All Unioners would have wanted to win the game for Baumgartl. “His eyes shone,” said Fischer about the moment when Baumgartl found out that he would play from the start. He is incredibly happy for the defender, says the Swiss: “He worked hard for it.”
Baumgartl comeback important for Union Berlin in a tight schedule
Baumgartl said he needed more game practice to be 100% fit. He should get that in the coming weeks. Union goes into the international break as the leaders in the table, but after that it’s one after the other. “Now we have a 14-day break. And then there are six weeks that have never existed in this form in football,” said Fischer. 13 games are scheduled during this time. “I am convinced that in the end we need each and every one of us to get through this in the best possible way.”
Union has three away games in a row after the break: at Eintracht Frankfurt (October 1), in the Europa League at Malmö (October 6) and then at VfB Stuttgart (October 9). “That’s quite a challenge,” said Fischer.
