Unapproachable Schouten wins the Leeuwarden marathon and gives teammate victory in the final classification

Irene Schouten won the final skating marathon in Leeuwarden today. At the final part of the skating season, the Hoogkarspelse was again too fast for the competition.

Schouten, who became world champion in the five kilometers last weekend, was given a special task in advance. Her injured teammate Maaike Verweij won the final standings of the Marathon Cup. The only condition was that her closest attacker Esther Kiel could not win by a lap.

With this message in their pocket, Schouten and her teammates did everything they could to prevent Kiel from driving away. That plan succeeded with verve, because Schouten was ultimately too fast for Marijke Groenewoud and Kiel in the final sprint.

For 30-year-old Schouten, who started a marathon eight times this year, it was already her sixth victory this season in the Marathon Cup.
