UN Security Council begins emergency meeting on Ukraine

An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation around Ukraine began in New York, broadcast ongoing on YouTube.

“Russian actions will lead to terrible consequences in Ukraine, Europe and the world,” US Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at the meeting.

The proposal to hold an urgent meeting of the Council was earlier made by Ukraine, France and the European Union. The topic of discussion was the recognition on the evening of September 21 by Russian President Vladimir Putin of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, the corresponding document was submitted for ratification to the State Duma. Putin justified the decision by Ukraine’s failure to comply with the Minsk agreements and the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass.

Kiev called the incident a violation of the Minsk agreements, the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine. “We don’t owe anything to anyone. And we will not give anything to anyone,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In Kiev, the DPR and LPR are considered part of Ukraine.

Putin instructed the Russian military to ensure the maintenance of peace in the DPR and LPR
