More than 120 people have been killed and injured in Afghanistan in recent days, the United Nations says. The organization calls on the Taliban to provide greater security for minorities so that they can hold their religious services without fear of being attacked.
IS claimed responsibility for several bombings carried out in Afghanistan over the weekend. On Friday and Saturday, Shia Muslims in the west of the capital Kabul were killed. On Sunday, according to unconfirmed reports, another bombing would have taken place. According to local news channel Kabul News, the target was a bus in the Chandawol district of the Afghan capital, which is also home to many Shia Muslims.
IS has been active in Afghanistan since 2014 and is seen as the country’s biggest security challenge since the Taliban took control of the country in August. Other recent attacks in Kabul, mainly on Shiites, were also claimed by IS. The Shia Hazara minority makes up between 10 and 20 percent of Afghanistan’s predominantly Sunni population of 38 million.
