UN: Five women murdered every hour by partner or family | Abroad

In comparison: only 11 percent of the murders of men and boys take place in the family sphere, while they are much more likely to be victims. Globally, 81 percent of homicides are committed by the male gender. The researchers also point out that the number of murders of women has hardly changed over the past decade and that the true number may be much higher.

The absolute number of murders of girls and women in the family sphere is highest in Asia, with 17,800 cases in 2021. However, when looking at the share of women in the total population, Africa is much more dangerous with 17,200 murders: 2.5 murders per 100,000 women versus 0.8 in Asia. In the EU, 2,500 women were killed by a partner or relative last year. That is 0.6 cases per 100,000 women.

The UN has declared Friday as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Then a campaign against gender-based violence will also start, which will continue until December 10.
