The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors nuclear activities on behalf of the UN, is holding emergency consultations on Ukraine. Wednesday in Vienna it will be about the safety of nuclear power plants and the storage of nuclear waste in the country that is at war. Great concern has been raised about the site of the Chernobyl reactor that exploded in 1986.
The ruins encased in a sarcophagus fell into the hands of Russian troops on Thursday. More nuclear radiation has been measured since the start of the Russian attack last Thursday, but according to the IAEA this does not pose a threat to public health. The agency received a report on Sunday that missiles had hit another nuclear waste storage facility, but no damage was reported to the building and no radioactivity was reported to have escaped.
