UMCG hands out earplugs at the Rammstein concert. ‘Hearing damage is inevitable without caps’

Employees of the UMCG ENT department hand out free earplugs at the Rammstein concerts in the Stadspark.

The department hopes to protect concertgoers from hearing damage with the earplugs. According to Myrthe Hol, professor of otology and ENT specialist at the UMCG, damage is almost inevitable at the 103 decibels (instead of the usual 100 db) that Rammstein is allowed to produce in the Stadspark.

“The sound intensity of three decibels causes twice as much noise in your ears. The cilia cells in the cochlea of the ear that absorb the sound cannot withstand so much noise,” Hol explains. As a result, you can suffer hearing damage and even become deaf. At a noise level of 103 decibels, hearing damage is almost inevitable if visitors do not wear earplugs.”

Prior to the concerts, the UMCG staff will share earplugs from the ice cream stand at the beginning of the Stadspark. The ENT department also advises to put in earplugs at 80 decibels.
