The Umbrella Academy is one of the most popular series on Netflix. The dark superhero epic is peppered with black humor and lots of action. That’s what we expect from Season 4.
Not many shows get past the first season on Netflix. Because only those productions that generate both public attention and the corresponding viewing figures can count on a sequel. “The Umbrella Academy” has been running very successfully since 2019. The superhero series is based on the comics of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá and already has three seasons; a 4th is being planned. This should also be the grand finale of the series. Here’s what we already know about Umbrella Academy Season 4.
When will Umbrella Academy season 4 be released?
The planned 4th season is also scheduled to be the last. This was announced by the streaming service Netflix in August 2022 in the form of a post. The cancellation comes as a surprise to many, since the series had established itself as one of the few in its genre and had built up a fairly large fan base. The most likely reason for the cancellation is that season 3 didn’t attract as many new viewers as hoped. Netflix has been taking a tough line on this for years. After all, it is certain that another season will come.
When exactly we can expect “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4 is not yet known. Due to the pandemic, there were two years between seasons 2 and 3, but only one between seasons 1 and 2. This also corresponds to the usual production rhythm of Netflix. In general, therefore, many expect a release in late summer and early fall of 2023.

It could go on like this
So far, Netflix hasn’t announced anything regarding the plot of The Umbrella Academy Season 4. However, the events of season 3 and of course the underlying comics already give some clues as to how the Hargreeves siblings will continue. Beware, here are some spoilers for the events of the series so far.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 raises many questions
In Season 3, the super-powered Hargreeve siblings are once again drawn into a parallel timeline. There they met their counterparts, the so-called “Sparrows”. And as if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, they also had to stop an extraordinarily destructive ball of lightning. However, the goal was always to reset the universe, so to speak, and thus undo the chaos that time travel had caused, which was among other things self-inflicted. Apparently that worked in the season 3 finale, only to be immediately challenged again.
“The Umbrella Academy” now has to answer exactly these questions. What exactly did stopping the interdimensional machine do? What plane of time and reality are the Hargreeves in now? What is certain is that the ominous Reginald Hargreeves, the founder of the Umbrella Academy, also plays an important role in this world again. At the end of the season, the siblings split up to explore this new world where they seem to have no powers. Allison also appears to be in her personal utopia, reunited with her daughter and Raymond, her 1950s husband.
Netflix is thus creating an almost identical starting situation for season 4 of “The Umbrella Academy” as for the previous seasons. In addition, an important aspect should be how the siblings get their powers back
Mysterious post-credit scene
Perhaps the most important question, however, comes from the post-credits scene, where we see Ben sitting on a train reading. On the one hand, the arc is stretched to the beginning of the series and the birth of the Hargreeves. We remember: The siblings were all born at the same time under mysterious circumstances, when their mothers became pregnant very quickly and the children were born directly. In Ben’s case, all of this happened during a train ride.
The question that now arises is: Which Ben do we see here? And are there possibly more Hargreeve counterparts in this new world? Showrunner Steve Blackman In any case, promises a “great story in Season 4 that will keep fans in their seats until the last few minutes”.

A sinister Klaus
In an interview with The Wrap Klaus actor Sheehan indicated another dark phase for his character. Klaus isn’t known for his mental stability anyway. The loss of his newly befriended powers and the absence of Ben may not bode well for the unstable.
“You can be damn sure that by the start of season four (…) he’s going to go back to that very destructive, self-pitying way,” says Sheehan. That would again emphasize the arc drawn to season 1 and thus the final character of season 4.
Meet the cast of The Umbrella Academy Season 4
Nothing definite is known about the cast either. However, it’s very likely that all of the main cast will return as they did in previous seasons – even those whose characters are actually dead thanks to the outcome of the season finale.
Of course, this primarily affects the Academy Hargreeves:
- Tom Hopper as Luther Hargreeves, number 1 and leader of the group
- David Castaneda as Diego Hargreeves, number 2
- Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves, Number 3
- Robert Sheehan as Klaus Hargreeves, Number 4
- Aidan Gallagher as Five, number 5
- Justin H Min as Ben Hargreeves, Number 6
- Eliot Page as Viktor Hargreeves, number 7
But even apart from that, you can’t count on prominent departures:
- Colm Feore as Reginald Hargreeves, the mysterious adoptive father of the Hargreeve siblings
- Adam Godley as Phinneus Pogo, chimpanzee and caretaker of the Hargreeves
- Ritu Arya as Lila Pitts, gifted with mimicking the powers of others, friend of Diego
- Genesis Rodríguez also endowed with powers as Sloane Hargreeves (née Sparrow), Luther’s wife and as a member of the Sparrows
The Hargreeves and their powers
Luther Hargreeves (number 1): Luther has great physical strength and stamina, which is why Reginald ranked him “Number 1”. After a serious injury, he is saved by a serum that gives him the physiology of an ape, but also boosts his powers.
Diego Hargreeves (number 2): The somewhat quick-tempered Diego has the gift of always hitting his target with thrown objects, which is why he develops a special affinity for knives. He and Luther have a strained relationship due to their competition as Nos. 1 and 2.
Allison Hargreeves (number 3): Allison can manipulate people with her voice. All she has to do is say the formula “I heard the rumor…”. She has a daughter, Claire, but their relationship is always overshadowed by Allison’s gift.
Klaus Hargreeves (number 4): The Eccentric Klaus has the gift of speaking to the dead and materializing them. He likes to numb the effects of this ability with drugs and alcohol. in Season 3, thanks to Reginald, he finds out more about his powers, which among other things make him nearly immortal.
Five (number 5): Number 5 has no name or probably rejects it and does not use it. He can teleport through space and time, making him a powerful member of the Academy and later the Commission, for which he occasionally works as an assassin. The time travel also puts him back in his youthful body while his siblings are all grown up.
Ben Hargreeves (number 6): Ben can summon tentacles from another dimension, which can then grow out of his body and deal a lot of damage. He died under mysterious circumstances many years ago and henceforth can only be seen by Klaus because of his gift.
Vanya/Viktor Hargreeves (number 7): At the beginning of the series, Vanya’s/Viktor’s powers are still unknown, as Reginald suppresses them due to their dangerousness. Simply put, the number 7 of the Hargreeve siblings can convert sound into energy. This powerful gift manifests itself in waves of energy, telekinesis, and the ability to fly, among other things.
