The police are making an ultimate attempt to unsolve nine unsolved murders of women through a large-scale campaign that will start on Wednesday. One of the cases that is central to the ‘Identify me’ campaign in which the police cooperates with Interpol is the case of the Girl of Teteringen from 1990.
On December 25, 1990, Christmas Day, the body of a young woman or girl between the ages of 15 and 25 was found in the woods near Teteringen. It has never become clear who she is. It is clear, however, that she was killed and that she was probably seriously neglected and abused before her death.
The woman’s body was covered with a green blanket and a large piece of carpet. A red cloth was draped over her head. A neighborhood search at the time indicated that the wrapped body may have been seen as early as December 23.
Several people were arrested following the discovery. Despite this, it is still unknown who the young woman is and under what circumstances she died.
‘Terribly sad business’
This case is one of nine gruesome Dutch murders for which the police is now once again drawing attention. “They are all terribly sad cases in which the bodies are severely mutilated,” says forensic specialist Carina van Leeuwen of the Amsterdam cold case team.
In 2021, more than thirty years after the gruesome find in Teteringen, an attempt was made to get things going smoothly. Mayor Paul Depla of Breda then unveiled an interactive memorial board with a QR code at the place where the girl was found. This was to ensure that people who know more about the case would share their knowledge.
