Honorary President Uli Hoeneß has clearly positioned himself on the question of whether FC Bayern should extend the contract with sponsor Qatar Airways. “I would be in favor of extending it. But I don’t have to decide anything, the board does that,” said Hoeneß in “Sunday regulars’ table” on BR television.
The Bavarians have already announced that they will decide on the controversial sponsorship with the airline after the World Cup at the end of the year.
The sponsorship, which is lucrative for the association, caused a dispute at the general meeting in autumn 2021 and ultimately chaos.
On Saturday there is another annual general meeting of the German record champions.
Hoeness is a member of the supervisory board of FC Bayern and is therefore also involved in important issues at the club through his office. “The board of directors has to clarify that first. And then you first have to ask whether the Qataris will extend it. Because after the theater that has been in Europe in recent years, it is not certain that they will prolong it. It always takes two,” said Hoeneß.
Most recently, the 70-year-old caused a stir with a public dispute with the former managing director of the German Football League, Andreas Rettig, because of the World Cup hosts.
At the annual general meeting on Saturday (6 p.m.) in the Audi Dome, the election of the executive committee is also on the agenda. Herbert Hainer, Hoeneß’s successor as President, wants to be re-elected for another three years.
