Ukrainians move from hotel to old municipal yard in Roden

Fifty Ukrainians, who are currently still in the Fletcher Hotel Langewold in Roden, will move to the former municipal yard on 1e Energieweg in Roden by January 1, 2024 at the latest.

The municipality of Noordenveld has been looking for new places to receive Ukrainian refugees for some time, because reception in hotels is very expensive and undesirable. “You don’t want to let refugees stay in a hotel for too long, because they cannot cook for themselves, for example,” says councilor Alex Wekema (PvdA/GroenLinks).

In May of this year it was announced that around forty Ukrainians could move into the building of the former Hopmans animal practice. Because the contract with Hotel Langewold expires this year, a place was sought for the remaining fifty Ukrainians. This location has been created with the old municipal shipyard – which is empty now that there is a new shipyard at Ekkelkamp.

Councilor Wekema says that the municipality of Noordenveld is now very busy preparing the new location. “We are looking at how we want to arrange the housing. This can be done with units, chalets or an indoor renovation. It is not yet certain, but there is a need for haste because we have to get it done this year.”

The refugees can stay at the 1e Energieweg for a maximum of two years. “Two years is really the maximum, because we want to dispose of the old municipal yard. The disposal of the building is also included in the coverage for the new building.”

The departure of the fifty Ukrainians does not mean an end to the reception in Hotel Langewold. “This week, 28 new Ukrainian refugees arrived at the hotel,” says Wekema. “We have until January 1 to find a solution for them.”

That solution does not necessarily have to be in the municipality of Noordenveld. “We are looking at options throughout the province. It is a growing problem, because there is a lot of pressure on the Ukraine shelter. We cannot solve that alone.”
