The footage shows locals offering the Russian soldier – who had been ordered to invade Ukraine – tea and food. It is striking how young he is, like so many Russian soldiers who have already been captured by the Ukrainian troops.
“It’s not the fault of these young men. They don’t know why they are here. They have dated maps, they are lost,” said a man out of view of the camera. It is not known where exactly in Ukraine the images were taken.
The soldier then gets a pat on the back from a Ukrainian woman who tells him that “everything will be okay”. Another woman gives him the opportunity to video call his mother. The Russian bursts into tears as soon as he sees her. He gives her a kiss and starts to cry. The Ukrainian woman reassures the mother. “Natasha, God be with you. We will call you later. He is alive and well.”
