Ukrainian secret service intercepts conversation between Russian soldier and his wife: “It’s not a morgue, it’s a landfill” | War Ukraine and Russia

Ukraine’s secret service has released another phone call it says it intercepted between a Russian soldier and his wife. It would appear that the Russians put their fallen soldiers on a list of missing persons to cover up their losses. And that the bodies would then be stored in “makeshift dumps”, where they are piled up to “two meters high”. It is not possible to independently check whether what the Security Service (SBU) claims is correct.

The recording, published earlier today, features the voices of a man and a woman. “We found him, Inna’s brother”, the man starts off. “Who? Who?” the woman asks.

– “Inna’s brother, who a month ago…”

– “Ah, that one. Where was he? Was he still alive?”

– “New. I’d better not tell you.”

– “Ah. Was he found dead?”

– “Yes. And as said. Better you don’t know.”

– “Tell me anyway. What are you… Was he dead?”

– “His sister, she went to Donetsk. There was a… actually a landfill.”

– “She paid money. They were stacked there one on top of the other.”

– “Everyone was walking around. Anyway, she paid money, a lot of money. And so they move them until they find him.”

– “Oh no. And that bearded bastard tells stories… Bastard…”

– “She says… There’s a whole pile. There’s no place to put them anymore. It’s a landfill. I tell you in Russian: a landfill.”

– “As high as a man.”

– “She said thousands. thousands. They’re thrown there, and then… It’s easier for them to say they’re missing in battle. It’s easier for them.”

– “Fucking bastards.”

– “And she says it was pure coincidence that she found him. She went there intentionally. She says it’s a real nightmare. She took money and just went there. She found out where that dump was. It’s not a morgue, it’s a landfill. They say so themselves. It’s a big field or something. There is a fence around. It’s closed. They don’t let anyone through. And bring them there by the thousands. She says thousands.”

Official figures

The official figures on the number of deaths on the Russian side vary widely. According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the counter stands at about 26,000 today. Russia itself barely communicates about it. The latest official figure is dated March 25 and according to the Russian army was 1,351 dead.

However, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry says it has already received more than 32,000 questions from relatives of missing Russian soldiers, who are seeking information about their loved ones. That’s what adviser Viktor Andrusiv said, according to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

News channel Al Jazeera reported yesterday that it was visiting refrigerated train cars in which numerous bodies of fallen Russian soldiers are kept by Ukraine. Bodies that are not claimed.

“Ukraine treats dead enemies better than they treat civilians,” said Ukrainian Colonel Volodymyr Liamzin. “We will keep the bodies for as long as necessary. The government will decide them, because Russia refuses to accept them. They do not want. Every body is evidence of a war crime. If they continue to refuse to take them back, Ukraine will bury them itself, at its own expense.”
