Ukrainian refugees evicted from Amsterdam shelter, owner wants ‘only women, children and ethnic Ukrainians’

All refugees who have been accommodated on one of the two boats at Java Island in Amsterdam have been put on the street. It concerns about 80 refugees. The reason for the sudden departure is that the boat owner has made demands on who is on his boat. He wants only women, children and ethnic Ukrainians to be admitted. This has been confirmed by the municipality.

This morning the refugees suddenly had to pack all their belongings and leave the boat. The group has been accommodated on the boat since mid-March.

The municipality, which is responsible for the reception of refugees, says that the owner’s demands cannot be met. For that reason, the collaboration has ended with immediate effect. “The refugees who are therefore received on the boat will be accommodated in another place in the city,” a spokesperson for the municipality said.

It is one of two boats on Java Island. The other boat belongs to someone else, no one was sent away from there. Some refugees can move from one boat to another. The rest will be collected at various other locations.
