Ukrainian prime minister warns of ‘migration tsunami’ coming winter | Abroad

If Russia continues its air strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, there is a threat of a large increase in the number of refugees. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal warns about this.

“If there is no electricity, heating or water in Ukraine, it could trigger another migration tsunami,” Sjmyhal told the German newspaper ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’. The interview will appear in the Sunday edition, but part of it was already released on Saturday.

The recent Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine aim to plunge the country “into a humanitarian catastrophe,” Shmyhal said. If a cold winter comes, many people could freeze to death, he says.

The Ukrainian Prime Minister is therefore launching a call for “mobile devices that generate electricity and heat” and devices for water treatment. Fuel for the generators is “currently” still available, or so it sounds. “But if the electricity and heating fail on a large scale, we will need even more.” In that case, an “import of electricity” from the west may also be necessary, according to Sjmyhal.

Ukraine is also “impatiently” waiting for new ammunition, which is needed “right now”, the prime minister said in the interview. “It is literally a matter of days.” He also asks for additional jammers against the “twenty to thirty Iranian kamikazedrones” that Russia deploys daily against Ukraine.
