Ukrainian Mahuchich indoor world champion in high jump – athletics

Olympic bronze medalist Mahuchich crossed 2.02 meters in Belgrade and won ahead of Australia’s Nicola McDermott, who mastered 2.00 meters. Olympic champion Marija Lassizkene from Russia, like all athletes in the country, is not allowed to take part in the World Championships because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Irina Gerashchenko from Ukraine was fifth with 1.92 meters.

Mahuchich and Gerashchenko are part of the small Ukrainian contingent that has started in Belgrade despite the Russian attack on homeland. The winner, who had painted her fingernails in the colors of her country, wrapped herself in a yellow and blue flag and was celebrated by the Ukrainian team.

Jacobs is crowned Sprint World Champion

100-meter Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs from Italy is now also 60-meter world champion in the hall. Jacobs won in Belgrade on Saturday evening in 6.41 seconds ahead of defending champion and 100m world champion Christian Coleman of the USA. The American at the same time was only a hair’s breadth behind Jacobs. Marvin Bracy from the USA ran in third place in 6.44 seconds.

Coleman was banned for a year and a half for doping control violations and missed the Tokyo Olympics last year. Therefore, the duel with Jacobs was awaited with great excitement.
