Ukrainian discovers his brother was murdered in Butya: “Why? He was just walking down the street” | Abroad

Many people are missing due to the war in Ukraine. Family members are in constant uncertainty: are their brother, father or mother still alive? A camera crew captured the harrowing moment in Boetsja when a man learns that his brother has been murdered. “How am I going to tell this to his seven-year-old daughter?”

The images show that the man is standing with others next to a row of body bags in Boetsja. Last week, Russian troops withdrew from this suburb of Kiev, revealing numerous atrocities. Dozens of civilians were murdered. Their bodies were often left on the street.

“They killed him for nothing”

Vova’s brother is one of those civilian victims. Journalists were there when the man found his body. Since March 26, the Ukrainian had been looking for his brother. “When they showed the bodies, I recognized him immediately,” says Vova, very upset. “They killed him for nothing. Why? He was just walking down the street.”

The victim is 32 years old and has a seven-year-old daughter. “How am I going to tell my mother this? And to my seven-year-old niece? She is only a child.”

Anna is looking for mother, aunt and cousin

Twenty kilometers away, in Borodyanka, Anna is looking for her mother, aunt and cousin. The trio has been missing since a Russian attack on a building. Ten minutes before the offensive, Anna spoke to her mother on the phone. They discussed how the relatives could flee from Borodyanka to Kiev. “A lot of bridges and roads were destroyed, so I sent them a map to show the way.” According to Anna, her mother said they would figure out how to escape.

Anna hasn’t heard from her mother since that phone call. The young woman still hopes to find her family alive.
