Ukrainian children will be taught next week in former school Esdal College

Children from Ukrainian refugee families staying in Emmen will go to school from next Monday. A former Esdal College building on Angelsloërdijk has been temporarily set up for this purpose.

Forty children between the ages of 4 and 18 will soon be able to go there. It is the intention that lessons will be given at this location until the summer holidays.

The families to which these children belong are taken care of in holiday park Parc Sandur, the former Fletcher Hotel, by private individuals and in the municipality of Borger-Odoorn.

“We are very happy that we can now start educating the children from Ukraine,” said alderman Raymond Wanders. “We have done everything we can to get the students to school as soon as possible.”

The building will be available until the summer, but will serve as a temporary shelter for the Angelslo community center. New construction is planned for that building. It will be looked into in due course to see if another school building is available.

In the coming months, the municipality will still be working on finding sufficient reception locations for the refugees. It is still unclear how many people will need housing and education in the near future.
