NU.nl regularly gives you an overview of the situation in Ukraine. This time: The battle for the city of Nova Kakhovka in the southern region of Kherson. Ukraine retaliated there in an attempt to retake the city, resulting in deaths. Furthermore, a square near the Russian consulate in the Polish city of Krakow has been given a striking name.
Back to the battlefield in southern Ukraine. At least 12 civilians have been injured in shelling of two hospitals and apartment complexes in Mykolaiv, the governor of the region said.
According to him, Russia has fired several missiles at civilian targets in Mykolaiv. The governor fears more civilian deaths have occurred.
In Mykolaiv almost no buildings are left standing.
United Nations: More than 5,000 civilian deaths
The UN Human Rights Department has confirmed 5,024 civilian deaths and 6,520 wounded so far. The actual number is probably much higher.
Ukraine thinks there have been many more civilian casualties. The country is talking about tens of thousands of victims. Russia continues to deny hitting civilian targets and claims it targets military targets only.
Ukraine counterattack in Kherson
Ukraine is also trying to do this in the southern region of Kherson. There the battle for the city of Nova Kakhovka has broken out in full force.
Ukrainian troops fired on hundreds of homes, a hospital and a chemical depot on Tuesday, according to the Russians. At least seven people were said to have been killed and dozens injured.

Heavy rocket attack on weapons depot in Nova Kakhovka
The main first target of the Ukrainian army was a Russian weapons depot in Nova Kakhovka. The depot exploded during a heavy rocket attack, Ukraine reports.
It seems that the HIMARS precision missile systems have also been deployed here. These have recently been delivered to the United States, among others. Ukraine can thus attack Russia more accurately. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is making great strides in retaking the cities from the Russians.
Ukraine and Russia to discuss grain
Ukraine, Russia and Turkey will hold talks with the United Nations on Wednesday about grain exports from Ukraine. It concerns military consultations between the three countries. Ukraine and Russia are among the largest grain producers in the world. Their war leads to food shortages, among other things. The blockade of Ukrainian ports and the sanctions against Russia mean that much less wheat is coming to the market.
Turkey has good ties with both Kyiv and Moscow and cooperates extensively with Russia economically. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not participate in anti-Russian sanctions. He is trying to restart peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. The two countries have previously met in Turkey.
Russia’s troops set fire to grain fields in Ukraine’s fertile Zaporizhzhia region. Remember this picture every time Russians say they care about global food security. Millions of people across the world will face hunger – because Russia launched a brutal war against Ukraine.

EU has frozen almost €14 billion in ‘Russian money’
The European Union said it has frozen 13.8 billion euros in Russian money and goods so far. Due to the imposed sanctions, many Russian oligarchs cannot access their money in Europe or, for example, their yachts.
A core of five countries has cracked down on Russian oligarchs the hardest. The EU also calls on other countries to comply with sanctions against Russians and Belarusians.
The EU currently has 98 companies and 1,160 individuals on a blacklist.
US: Iran to supply many drones to Russia
Iran plans to deliver hundreds of drones to Russia, according to US intelligence. These are drones that can operate weapons.
“Our intelligence also suggests that Iran will train Russian troops to use these drones,” security adviser Jake Sullivan said. According to him, the planned delivery confirms that Russia is struggling to maintain its arms supply. The country would suffer huge losses in Ukraine.
Drones play an important role in the war in Ukraine. Both sides deploy the unmanned aerial vehicles, for example to fire missiles from a distance or to drop small bombs on targets. Ukraine gets drones from Turkey and the United States, among others.
The war is intensifying with stronger weapons on both sides. More and more civilians are fleeing. Like here in Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.
Striking: Putin is going to visit Iran
After the American news that Iran would be supplying drones to Russia, the Kremlin comes out with a striking announcement. Russian President Vladimir Putin is going to visit Iran.
In Tehran, Putin will not only speak with the leader of Iran, but also meet with Turkish President Erdogan. Moscow says the talks are about Syria. Erdogan would also like to try again to start peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
Square near Russian embassy in Krakow is now called ‘Square of Free Ukraine’
You have seen it happen more often in recent months: squares and streets near ‘Russian places’ such as embassies are being renamed to encourage Ukraine. This is also the case in the Polish city of Krakow.
At the Russian consulate there, part of Biskupi Square has been renamed ‘Square of Free Ukraine’.
Improvement: An earlier version of this post said it was about the square near a Russian embassy. That is incorrect, this is a Russian consulate. We have therefore adjusted it.
