Russia has fired missiles at the port of Odesa on Saturday, the Ukrainian army says. The alleged attack comes a day after the deal signed by Russia and Ukraine to resume grain exports through ports on the Black Sea.
According to the army, four cruise missiles were fired at the port. Two of them would have hit “port infrastructure”, a local government official and a Ukrainian army unit said on Telegram. The two other missiles were shot down, according to the army.
Local media reported that there were no fatalities or injuries. The damage from a shock wave and a small fire that was quickly extinguished would also not be too bad. The Russian side has not yet responded to the attack.
The Ukrainian government says in a response that President Vladimir Putin is “spitting in the face” of the United Nations and Turkey with the attack on Odesa, with which Kyiv and Moscow closed their grain deal on Friday. Odesa is one of Ukraine’s most important export ports on the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the UN and Turkey to ensure that Russia complies with the agreements.
Wopke Hoekstra calls alleged attack ‘scandalous’
Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs) condemns the alleged rocket attack on the port of the Ukrainian city of Odesa.
“Outrageous and unacceptable: a rocket attack on the seaport of Odesa just one day after the agreement was signed in Istanbul,” the foreign minister wrote on Twitter. According to Hoekstra, Russia must be held accountable.
