Ukraine plans further bid for Winter Games 2030

Kiev (dpa) – Despite the serious tensions with Russia, Ukraine is sticking to its bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics.

“Yes, we have insufficient infrastructure for winter sports, but we are working on it,” Sports Minister Wadym Hutzajt said in parliament, according to the Ukrinform agency. Kiev is currently looking at how to apply for the Olympics. The Eastern European country hopes that the commitment will boost its prestige.

At the Winter Games in Beijing, China, the country has just won a silver medal by ski freestyler Olexander Abramenko in the jumping competition. According to the statistics of the International Monetary Fund, Ukraine is the poorest country in Europe.

The upcoming Winter Games 2026 will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. The 2030 constituency also includes Sapporo, Japan, Salt Lake City, USA, and Vancouver, Canada. In addition, Buenos Aires and Georgia are also allegedly interested in hosting the 2030 Games.
