Ukraine invasion was “not unprovoked”.

At the request of Russia, Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters addressed the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday (8 February). In it, he primarily criticized the war: he considered Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “illegal”, but he also said that it was “not unprovoked”. “That’s why I also condemn the provocateurs in the strongest terms. So that’s out of the way.”

Despite Roger Waters’ choice of words, which is probably still quite reserved, this description is certainly a slap in the face to those who have been fighting for freedom and peace in Ukraine for months. His choice of words, which he perceives as pro-Russian, also contributes to this. Elsewhere in his speech he mentions the “arming of the Kiev regime by third parties”.

Waters said he calls for an end to all war activity in the world. He wanted to be loud for the “millions without a voice”: “Thank you for listening to us today, we are many who do not want to share in the profits of the war industry. We don’t voluntarily send our sons and daughters out to provide fodder for your cannons. We believe that the only sensible action today is to call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. No ifs and buts. Not a single Ukrainian or Russian life can be sacrificed anymore – they are all precious in our eyes.”

Roger Waters’ problematic worldview

In an interview with ROLLING STONE last year, Roger Waters revealed how the musician really ticks. Accordingly, he believes his name is on a “kill list supported by the Ukrainian government”. In the same conversation, the artist blamed NATO for the ongoing war and claimed that the organization actually gave Putin no choice but to invade Ukraine. In August, the artist called US President Joe Biden a “war criminal” on a CNN program and claimed that he was directly fueling the war in Ukraine.

Polly Samson, songwriter and wife of David Gilmour, recently reached out to Roger Waters with clear words. In a tweet, she wrote: “Unfortunately, you are anti-Semitic to the core.” She also considers him a Putin apologist. He was a “lying, thieving, hypocritical, tax-avoiding, playback-singing, misogynistic, megalomaniac envious lamb” – he should stop with “the nonsense”. Sharing the post, Gilmour captioned it, “Every word provably true.”
