Ukraine said on Sunday it wants consultations with Russia and members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) within 48 hours. The Eastern European country wants to discuss the Russian troop build-up near the border of Ukraine and within the annexed Crimea as soon as possible.
Ukraine made the call for consultations relying on what is known as the Vienna Document. That is the closing statement of the 2011 OSCE conference in Vienna on human rights, military security and economic cooperation, which was signed by both Russia and Ukraine – as well as by virtually all European countries, some Central Asian countries and the United States and Canada.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Moscow has still not responded after Kiev called on Friday to explain recent Russian military activities along the border with Ukraine. “That is why we are taking the next step. We are asking for a meeting with Russia and all participating states to discuss its (military) reinforcement and redeployment along our border and in occupied Crimea within 48 hours,” Kuleba tweeted. .
