British Foreign Office: Invasion of Ukraine will lead to casualties on the scale of the Soviet-Afghan war

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has warned Russia that any invasion of Ukraine would result in a “terrible quagmire and loss of life” on the scale of the Soviet-Afghan war, her quotes Guardian.

She urged President Vladimir Putin “to refrain and step back from Ukraine before he makes a major strategic mistake.” She felt that the Kremlin “has not learned the lessons of history”, saying that the invasion will only lead to “a terrible quagmire and loss of life, as we know after the Soviet-Afghan war and the conflict in Chechnya.”

According to the head of the British Foreign Office, London, together with its allies, will continue to support Ukraine, as well as urge Russia to de-escalate and participate in discussions. “What happens in Eastern Europe matters to the whole world,” Truss concluded.
