UEFA has fined Celtic €15,000 for a banner that fans of the Scottish club hung during the Champions League match with Shakhtar Donetsk.
The banner read ‘Fuck the crown’. The Celtic fans announced that they were not waiting for a tribute to the recently deceased English Queen Elizabeth II. UEFA found the banner ‘inappropriate at a sporting event’ and issued a fine.
During a minute of applause following the death of the Queen before the start of the away game against St. Mirren, part of the branch of the Scottish top club sang ‘clap your hands if you hate the royal family’. That text was also on a banner that was unfurled in the stands.
Some of the Celtic supporters oppose the English royal family because of the treatment of the Irish population in the past and sympathize with the Irish republicans.
