UEFA: fake tickets caused chaos around Champions League final

The chaos that erupted Saturday night around the Stade de France stadium in Paris, where the Champions League final was about to start, was partly because “thousands” of fans had bought fake tickets for the match. That is what the European Football Association UEFA announced after the match† Due to the disturbances in and around the stadium, the match between Liverpool and Real Madrid started 35 minutes later.

The gates did not open to supporters with fake tickets, causing large crowds of supporters to pile up and people with valid tickets to not be able to enter. According to UEFA, the entrance gates on the Liverpool side were blocked for this reason. At the same time, other supporters – presumably without a ticket – tried to climb over the fences and still enter.

Arrests

The disturbances around the stadium continued even after the late kick-off. The French police and mobile unit clashed with fans and local residents. UEFA writes that the police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse these people.

The Paris police themselves announced on Sunday morning to have arrested 68 people around the stadium. UEFA understands those affected by these events. UEFA says it will “continue to look at the chaos” with the French police and football association.

The match itself ended in a 1-0 for Real Madrid. The Spanish club won the most important European Cup by beating Liverpool for the fourteenth time.
