UEFA commissions independent investigation into chaos at Champions League final | NOW

UEFA has commissioned an independent report on the chaos surrounding the Champions League final on Saturday. The European Football Association wants to map out exactly what happened before decisions are made and the guilty are identified.

For the investigation, which is being conducted by the Portuguese Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, all parties involved are asked to tell their story. The findings will be made public and UEFA will decide what to do next based on those results.

Things went very wrong on Saturday at the Stade de France in Paris, where the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was held. In some places there was a rush at the entrance due to large crowds and long waiting times.

Many people also tried to enter the stadium without a ticket. Security couldn’t stop everyone. In the end, the game started 37 minutes later and it turned out that some 2,700 Liverpool fans missed the game despite a valid ticket.

The chaos led, among other things, to riots between the French police and English supporters, during which tear gas and pepper spray were used. Images showed that innocent fans were also being tackled.

The final ended in a 1-0 win for Real Madrid. Vinícius Júnior scored the decisive goal for the Spanish champions in the 59th minute.
