According to information from the sports show, two places should go to the two countries whose clubs performed best in European competitions in the previous season. This means that it is not the case, as initially planned, that big clubs can save themselves in weak years on the basis of the five-year coefficient in the Champions League. A strong season by German teams could therefore ensure fifth place in the premier class in the following season.
From 2024, 36 instead of 32 teams are to play in the Champions League. The other two places are to go to the third-placed country of the five-year ranking (currently France) and to the best champion who has not previously qualified directly (currently Scotland).
Fewer games, but more ten game days in the preliminary round
A league system should also replace the groups from 2024. Another demand from fan organizations and national leagues was to reduce the planned number of the additional 100 games and a total of ten instead of six preliminary round match days. A possible compromise could be that there will be eight games per team instead of ten. The number of game days should remain the same.
The calendar is full, every date is also needed for national competitions – for example for the English League Cup or for cup competitions with home and away games like in Spain. With the original plans, the Champions League could also have siphoned off TV money from the national leagues if TV stations put more money into the Champions League. The same applies to sponsors.
