Udo Lindenberg becomes an honorary citizen of Hamburg

There is already a Udo Lindenberg musical there – now the German rock legend is also set to become an honorary citizen of Hamburg. The award will be presented by Mayor Peter Tschentscher on September 7th at 7:30 p.m. in Hamburg City Hall.

It was Tschentscher himself who suggested Lindenberg as an honorary citizen. On May 17, 2021 he wrote in a post on Twitter: “Udo Lindenberg is one of the most important musicians of our time and has been sending clear messages for freedom and tolerance for decades. He shaped Hamburg and Hamburg shaped him. I congratulate him on his 75th birthday and propose him as a new honorary citizen of our city”.

Since 1813, honorary citizens have been awarded to those who have made a special contribution to a city. In addition to Lindenberg, Hamburg’s honorary citizens include soccer player Uwe Seeler, writer Siegfried Lenz and composer Johannes Brahms.

“I don’t have a problem with age, age rather has a problem with me”

Lindenberg has already dedicated several songs to the Hanseatic city, including “Hoch im Norden” (1972) and “Reeperbahn 2011” (2011) in collaboration with Jan Delay. The two musicians have been friends for years: “I was a huge fan for a long time. It was because of him that I started singing in the first place!” Delay wrote for “Zeit”.

After a long break due to the corona pandemic, Lindenberg went on tour again in summer 2022. And there is still no end in sight for the future either: “Three years full of deprivation and renunciation. That was really a hard time. I don’t have a problem with age, age has more of a problem with me,” said the singer.

Most recently, in 2021, he released the two singles “Wieder the same” and “Mittendrin”, which can also be heard on his last record “Udopium – Das Beste” – a special edition album with 75 tracks.
