U19 Bundesliga: Mainz 05 advances to the final against 1. FC Köln

Weiper’s goal decisive

The U19 talents from Mainz 05 are in the final of the German Championship for the first time since 2009. After beating 1. FC Köln 1-0 in the first leg, the FSV juniors got their ticket to the final on April 23 in the second duel on Friday thanks to a 0-0 draw. The opponent will most likely be BVB, who won 4-0 in the first leg at Hertha BSC. The second leg will take place in Dortmund on Saturday (11 a.m.).

In the Mainz-Cologne clash, the only semi-final goalscorer was Germany junior international Nelson Weiper, who made his senior debut in October and has been a regular substitute under coach Bo Svensson since February. With a market value of 2.5 million euros, he is one of the five most valuable U18 talents in Germany.

In 2009, Mainz not only reached the final, but also won it. Coach Thomas Tuchel’s team, including captain André Schürrle, beat BVB 2-1. While Eugen Gopko and Robin Mertinitz scored for FSV, Mario Götze scored the goal for Dortmund.
