The British heavyweight boxing blockbuster between WBC world champion Tyson Fury and ex-champion Anthony Joshua is probably off the table for good. A fight between Fury and Mahmoud Charr is also becoming increasingly unlikely, according to a statement from Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn.
Nothing has been heard from the “Gpysy King” camp since Fury’s last social media video last Thursday, in which he asked Joshua to sign the contract, Eddie Hearn said.
He is still “open to discussions”, but the fight between Joshua and Fury is currently on hold.
Instead, Hearn let it be known that his protégé Derek Chisora had been sent a contract for a third fight against Fury.
Place the boxing match between Mahmoud Charr and Tyson Fury?
Should Chisora, who clearly lost to Fury in 2011 and 2014, sign, Mahmoud Charr would also look into the tube.
The man from Cologne had raised hopes of a World Cup chance after Fury himself announced that he would box against Charr next.
Negotiations for a Fury vs. Joshua fight picked up speed a good month ago.
At that time, Joshua accepted the financial framework for the duel with the WBC champion (60:40 distribution of income in favor of Fury).
Last week, Fury then gave his compatriot a deadline to sign, which “AJ” missed.
Numerous U-turns at Tyson Fury
Fury then announced he was going to face Charr before briefly backtracking on Thursday, saying his management are continuing to negotiate with Joshua.
Hours later, the 2.06 meter giant made the next turn, canceled the British clash again and announced that he even wanted to play against two opponents in one evening in December.
Fury’s US promoter Bob Arum meanwhile sees the blame for the bursting mega fight solely on Hearn.
All parties involved, including the TV stations, agree that only the Joshua promoter is blocking the finalization of the deal, said the boxing mastermind on “talkSPORT”.
Hearn reacts mockingly to the 91-year-old’s statements. “Bob said two weeks ago, ‘No chance of the fight happening.’ Now there seems to be no more hurdles and it’s my fault. If you asked Bob what today is, there’s only a 50 percent chance he would know.”
