It’s still unclear who boxing champion Tyson Fury will fight next. Neither the long-awaited fight against Anthony Joshua nor the rematch against Oleksandr Usyk will happen anytime soon. Now the “Gypsy King” is holding his own casting.
“There’s a lot of guys out there who actually want to fight and make millions of dollars through me,” Tyson Fury twanged in an interview with Michelle Joy Phelps of “Behind the gloves“. “There are some opponents who really want. I just have to pick one in the next week.”
Whoever is “the most reasonable gets the fight. The most ridiculous doesn’t get it,” announced the WBC world champion. “At the end of the day, I choose these clowns, I make them rich.”
The German-Syrian Mahmoud Charr was recently in the room, and Derek Chisora and Daniel Ruiz are now also mentioned as possible opponents.
Fury actually wanted to fight Joshua, but in the middle of the negotiations he broke off the talks because his opponent had missed a deadline he had set. Another fight against Usyk has not yet materialized. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian is considering a move from heavyweight to cruiserweight.
Fury scoffs at Usyk: “Eat him up and spit him out again”
When asked about this, Fury made fun of his last opponent. “He’s more of a snack type anyway, I’d have him for breakfast most days. (…) If he wants to go back to cruiser or middleweight then he should. Doesn’t interest me. I offered him the fight – he didn’t want to. I offered the fight to Joshua – he didn’t want to. So I’m looking for another boxer.” After all, the 34-year-old doesn’t have “all his life time”.
He firmly rejected rumors that Fury himself had deliberately delayed a possible fight against Usyk because he would have preferred to fight Joshua. “When was it that I didn’t want to fight him?” he asked back: “The fight was offered to him and they publicly rejected it. If he wants the WBC belt, he should come and get it . If they want to challenge the conqueror, it’s better to bring a whole army. Otherwise I’ll eat him up and spit him out again.”
