There will be no objection from the municipality of Tynaarlo against the airport decision. This is the permit that allows Groningen Airport Eelde to remain open earlier and longer. The majority of the city council decided to do this last night.

The mayor and aldermen wanted to file an appeal to get a better explanation of the trade-off between economic gain and the interests of residents around the airport. Before the objection was sent to the Council of State, the council wanted support and advice from the council. That advice is: don’t do it.

The Leefbaar-Gemeentebelangen faction was afraid that the extension of opening hours would lead to relocation of the flights. “I was told that use will mainly take place during the holiday period and not every day,” says group leader Annemarie Machielsen after a meeting with the airport management. The party does not want to hinder the economic development of the airport.

This means that the coalition party is turning and the majority is against the objection. Fellow coalition party ChristenUnie also votes against after faction leader Henny van den Born refuted the reasons. “What remains is the demand for a sharp evaluation. That seems quite thin to me for an appeal. You can also simply consult.”

Two other coalition parties remain in favor of filing the appeal. “We are not against the airport, but we are cynical about the developments that have taken place there in the past ten years. A runway extension, the gateway to the north… It would generate a lot of money for the airport, but that did not happen,” said PvdA faction leader Anneke Lubbers.

GroenLinks remains of the opinion that the agreements between the government and the airport do not provide enough clarity for a good night’s sleep for local residents and possible housing development in Yde. “That is only possible if we submit an appeal,” says group leader Gea Bijkerk. 9 of the 23 council members ultimately voted in favor of an appeal, 14 against.

According to councilor Jurryt Vellinga (Livable-Municipal Interests), the new airport decision offers an opportunity for housing construction in Yde, where this was previously not possible. But the extension of opening hours can also have a negative impact on those opportunities due to possible additional noise. The appeal could have provided clarity about what is allowed and what is not.

That clarity now has to be found in a different way. That is why the councilor is entering into discussions with the central government, a spokesperson for the municipality confirms. It remains unclear for now whether housing construction in Yde will be possible due to the current rules. Both Dorpsbelang Yde and the Tynaarlo council would like new construction in the village.
