Two Zutphen prison departments closed because of thirteen infected detainees: ‘Necessary step’ Zutphen

The coronavirus keeps 76 Zutphen detainees in their cells for most of the day. Because thirteen fellow detainees have tested positive, two of the five departments within the PI Achterhoek have been quarantined.

This means that the regular day program in these two departments has been suspended since Thursday afternoon. Airing for detainees remains possible in an adapted form, just like taking a shower. Detainees are also given the opportunity to telephone their home front. There are no infections in the other three departments and the regular program can continue.

Test declined

As a precaution, all 192 detainees throughout the facility were tested. The thirteen detainees who tested positive have no to mild complaints. Four detainees have refused a corona test. They are treated in the same way as the infected detainees. There are also infections among staff. These employees stay at home.

According to branch director Danny Vette of PI Achterhoek, the forced quarantine is a significant and annoying measure for the detainees. “Certainly now that society is becoming more and more flexible. But it is a necessary step to limit the risk of further spread of the virus as much as possible.”

The 76 detainees in the two affected wards will undergo another test on Sunday and Tuesday. Depending on the outcome of this, the quarantine will be terminated. The PI Achterhoek also had to deal with outbreaks among the detainees in January and April 2021.
