A tragic incident overshadowed a Copa liberadores game in Santiago de Chile. When trying to get into the Colo Colo club stadium, two young people killed.
Before the group game between Colo Colo and the Brazilian team Fortaleza, there was a fatal crowd on Thursday. According to local authorities, fans of the home club tried to get access to the Estadio Monumental.
A protective fence went to the ground – two young people aged 13 and 18 were trammed under the metal and then trampled to death from the rising crowd.
The investigating prosecutor Francisco Morales said there was a mass panic. It is now also being examined whether a police vehicle was involved in the action. Investigations against an official were taken, it said.
Despite the dramatic incident, the game was kicked off as planned. But in the 70th minute there were further riots in the stadium. Colo Colo fans began to throw objects on the field. The Brazilian team players then fled into the cabin. Referee Gustavo Tejera from Uruguay broke off the game at 0-0.
Colo Colo players previously tried to have a comforting influence on the fans, including Arturo Vidal, who has been playing for his youth club since 2024. The former Bundesliga professional had become three times German champion with FC Bayern between 2016 and 2018.
The South American Football Association Conmebol commented on the incidents in Santiago and expressed his sympathy for the relatives of the deceased. The Copa Libertadores is considered the South American counterpart to the European Champions League.
